The Philippines Chess Team Assured of a Silver Medal Finish in the Asian Games
The Philippines repeat over the vaunted Indian team 2.5-1.5 in the 8th round of the men’s chess event in the Asian Games, to assure themselves of at least a silver medal finish and gate crashed to the finals against unbeaten China. The formidable Chinese which is bannered by an all Super GM cast upended equally tough Iran team 2.5-1.5 to set up a fiery final match with the Filipinos.
The old ones delivered the goods for the Philippines as GMs Rogelio Antonio (2573) and Eugene Torre (2484) rekindled their old fiery form as they disposed of higher rated opponents. Antonio hacked out a win over Krishnan Sasikiran (2688) in Board Two and Torre prevailing over GN Gopal (2609) to spearhead the superb showing of the Filipinos in the tournament. GM John Paul Gomez (2522) sealed the victory by drawing his game against Surya Ganguly (2644).
Wesley So (2669) was the lone casualty for the Filipinos as he yielded to Pentala Harikrishna (2657).
The Filipinos will battle the tough Chinese in the ninth round as the winner of this match will bring home the gold medal, whilst the winner of the game pitting India and Iranian will take home the bronze medal.
